Team


A large team of Packard Children’s Hospital health care providers will work with Yurelia and Fiorella Rocha-Arias before, during and after their separation surgery. Each team has a specific role in the girls’ care, but everyone works together.

Operating Room Team

The operating room team roles describe the team’s jobs during surgery. Operating room team members will examine the twins and extensively plan the surgery before the actual separation. Each twin will have her own operating room team during the separation surgery.

Role in Surgery 
Cardiac Anesthesiologist
Manages the anesthesia and pain management during the surgery
Cardiothoracic Surgeon
Separates the right atriums of the girls’ hearts and will repair their heart 
General Surgeon
Separates the girls’ chests, abdomens, livers, muscle and other tissue
Operating Room Nurse (Circulator)
Monitors the patient and serves as patient advocate during surgery. Coordinates care before, during and after surgery.
Perfusionist
Manages cardiopulmonary bypass equipment during cardiac portion of surgery to ensure adequate circulation and oxygenation.
Plastic Surgeon
Inserted tissue expanders to help the girls grow extra skin. The plastic surgery team will use that skin to close the surgery incisions.
Surgical Technologist or Scrub RN
Prepares surgical instruments for use and manages them during surgery.

Team Outside the Operating Room

Checks in the twins for their visits and processes all of the necessary paperwork
Biomedical Engineering
Makes sure all equipment is functioning correctly
Case Management
Plans and coordinates the twins’ hospital stay and post-hospital care
Chaplaincy
Cares for the family's spiritual needs
Child Life and Recreation Therapy
Prepares the twins for their various medical procedures and provide play activities
Critical Care
Cares for the girls after surgery in the intensive care unit
Interpretation Services
Helps the family communicate in Spanish with the Packard Children’s team
News and Communications
Manages all media inquiries and the http://twins.lpch.org Web site
Nursing
Provides and coordinates care for the twins during visits, imaging studies, procedures and recovery
Radiology
Obtains and interprets medical images, like CT and MRI scans
Social Work
Provide emotional support, care coordination and resource assistance
Security
Makes sure approved health care providers and visitors can spend time with the twins
