Treatment History and Plan

Birth-July 2007

A team of physicians at the children’s hospital in San Jose, Costa Rica have cared for Yurelia and Fiorella. Dr. Gerardo Mora-Badilla is their main physician. He is a pediatric cardiovascular surgeon (a doctor who operates on children’s hearts and blood vessels).

Evaluation at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital - July 26, 2007

The twins had an extensive examination and evaluation by their Packard Children’s Hospital team on July 26, 2007. This included an echocardiogram in our Children’s Heart Center. This was an outpatient clinic visit, and the twins did not stay overnight in the hospital.

Imaging Studies - August 12, 2007

Yurelia and Fiorella were placed under general anesthesia and had:

Tissue Expander Insertion Surgery - August 21, 2007

The twins had surgery to have three tissue expanders inserted. Tissue expanders are like balloons. They will eventually give each twin an additional 8 centimeters of skin. This additional skin will help to close their incisions once they are separated.

Weeks Prior to Surgery

The weeks leading up to surgery will allow the surgical team to:
  • Take the information from the evaluation and plan the detailed approach to the separation
  • Inject the girls’ tissue expanders to stretch their skin

Surgery

The surgery is expected to take approximately 12 hours. Some specific aspects of the surgery will only be known once the girls are in the operating room. Each twin will have her own full team in the operating room.

After Surgery

Once the Packard Children’s health care team feels that the girls are stable and clear of complications, they will return home to Costa Rica. The Packard care team as well as the girls’ primary care team in Costa Rica will remain in contact as necessary.
